Welcome to Kristinestad!

Welcome to Kristinestad - the town that was founded by Count Per Brahe in 1649 and was named after the reigning queen Christina. The small port town grew slowly until 1792 when the town was given trading rights. This led to rapid growth and Kristinestad attracted people from the middle class and craftsmen. The rise of seafaring, shipping companies, factories, breweries, fishing and various workshops contributed to the town's prosperity. Walking down the street you could smell tar, see warehouses full of salt and hear sailor songs coming from the taverns.

In the 1800s, Kristinestad's merchant fleet was one of the largest in the country and the port was one of the busiest in the Gulf of Bothnia. The town has never burned and the buildings date from different time periods, the oldest are from the 1700s but most are built in the 1800s.
